A Poem about Play

Submitted on 07/03/2017

POEM: Just Playing by Anita Wadley

When I'm building in the block area,
Please don't say I'm "just playing."
For you see, I'm learning as I play,
About balances and shapes
Who knows, I may be an architect someday.

When I'm getting all dressed up,
Setting the table, caring for the babies,
Don't get the idea I'm "just playing."
For you see, I'm learning as I play;
I may be a mother or father someday.

When you see me up to my elbows in paint
Or standing at an easel,
Or moulding and shaping clay,
Please don't let me hear you say, "He is just playing."
For you see, I'm learning as I play.
I'm expressing myself and being creative.
I may be an artist or an inventor someday.

When you see me sitting in a chair
"Reading" to an imaginary audience,
Please don't laugh and think I'm "just playing.'
For you see, I'm learning as I play.
I may be a teacher someday.

When you see me combing the bushes for bugs,
Or packing my pockets with choice things I find,
Don't pass it off as "just play.'
For you see, I'm learning as I play.
I may be a scientist someday.

When you see me engrossed in a puzzle
Or some "plaything' at my school,
Please don't feel the time is wasted in 'play.'
For you see, I'm learning as I play.
I'm learning to solve problems and concentrate.
I may be in business someday.

When you see me cooking or tasting foods,
Please don't think that because I enjoy it,
It is 'just play.'
I'm learning to follow direction and see differences.
I may be a cook someday.

When you see me learning to skip, hop,
Run and move my body,
Please don't say I'm "just playing."
For you see, I'm learning as I play.
I'm learning how my body works.
I may be a doctor, nurse or athlete someday.

When you ask me what I've done at school today,
And I say, "I just played',
Please don't misunderstand me.
For you see, I'm learning as I play.
I'm learning to enjoy and be successful in my work.
I'm preparing for tomorrow.
Today, I am a child and my work is play.

Changes to Gems Prep School in 2017!

Submitted on 17/01/2017

January 2017 ~ After more than two years servicing the local community, successfully retaining passionate Educators and being awarded an “Exceeding the National Quality Standard” rating last year, we are continuing to strive for excellence in the our delivery of quality educational programs at Gems Prep School.

At the end of last year, we identified and recognised both the need, and desire for our educators to work with different colleagues, as well as an opportunity to build relationships with all of our families. When we re-opened after the Christmas holiday break, the rooms looked quite different visually, however this was not the only change;

Kyra has joined Rachel and Katie in our Baby Gems room. This will be a great opportunity for Kyra, who is currently working through her Certificate III at TAFE, as both Rachel and Katie have an abundance of knowledge and insight to share.

Kathy, Stacey, Shona and Kate, join Nora in the Toddler Gems room. With the addition of these passionate educators, the room has a wealth of knowledge (Kathy has worked in child care for 30+ years!) plus the added bonus with Stacey studying her ECT degree. Newly certified Shona and Kate add a youthful vibrancy and vision to the room, which will prove helpful in keeping up with our active Toddlers!

Chantelle and Charlee join Lisa in the Pre-Kindy room. Lisa has a wonderful rapport with the children and families in the room already, which will be a great support to the Educators joining her. When the school term commences, we have an Early Childhood Teacher joining us at Gems, providing an educational program focussed on preparing children for Kindergarten.

Kaye will remain at Gems despite a full study load this year. Kaye will provide valuable relief cover to our educators.

Our Educational Leader, Emma, will now be working at Gems two days per week as programming support and inspiration to our Educators.

We thank everyone for their continued support of Gems Prep School, as we strive to improve our service and engage with the local community, through various events. Check out our educational play spaces, created by our Educators, as they transition in to their new rooms.
